The Chaperus story began in childhood (as early as 8 years old) when Deidre, the founder, alongside her sisters and cousins, made doll clothes from scraps of outgrown clothing and other garments. Her biggest sewing project was making a pair of pants for her 6th grade dance performance and graduation from Page Elementary school in Oklahoma City. Her Godmother, Nana, helped her sew these blue polyester pants, with a slit from the bottom hem to mid-calf, in her sewing room of the once famous Youngblood Hotel.
Influenced by her mother’s passion for interior decorating, Deidre creates from the memories of her childhood home where she, her mother, five sisters and one brother lived. It was always stylish with the latest designs, trends and current color of the year. Other Important influences and memories include learning to hand embroider pillowcases and table scarves from her grandmother, Mama Florence.
Deidre’s love of family and passion for creating unique gifts inspired the inception of Chaperus. The name Chaperus is a family legacy cumulated from three generations: Chapman, Perkins, and Russell.
